Matagorda Bay Area Boasts The Lowest Prices On The Texas Gulf Coast

The secrets out! People from all over Texas are starting to discover the Matagorda Bay area, nestled in the middle of Texas's Gulf Coast. The area includes Matagorda, Port O'Connor, Alamo Beach and more. It is a perfect place to get away from the city bustle and fast traffic hustle. If you do start missing the fast pace of the big cities, Houston, San Antonio and Corpus Christi are but a couple of hours away.

Proximity to the Gulf of Mexico, fishing and other water activities as well as the cozy small town feel make this a desirable vacation area as well as an ideal spot for retirees. Matagorda, Port Lavaca and Port O'Connor real estate is taking off with prices tripling in the last three years and still remaining the lowest prices on the Texas Gulf Coast.

There has been an increase of new listings in the area since July 2006, most of which are because of new construction in the area.  Construction of new developments has increased demonstrating the high demand for affordable waterfront property.

Here is some information regarding the different communities in this waterfront area such as location, recreational activities offered and a bit of history.

Port Lavaca is located near the center point of the 275-mile Texas Gulf Coast, offering visitors a wide variety of public park facilities, RV accommodations and excellent marinas. The tropical, seaside environment and community charm add to an attractive, family-oriented vacation.

Matagorda is the third oldest Anglo town in Texas. Matagorda has a population of 1,752, but a week-end and summer influx swells that number considerably. Located at the end of Highway 60 South, the town is seven miles by car from the Gulf of Mexico. The main industries are commercial and recreational fishing and ranching.

Matagorda offers some of the finest saltwater fishing on the entire Gulf Coast. Its vast coastlines stretch for over 50 miles, from Sargent to the east, to the Port O'Conner Jetties to the west, and north to Palacios. The historic town of Matagorda is located in the center of the coastline on the Colorado River. More and more metropolitan Houston anglers are discovering that the short two-hour drive places them within a cast of the trophy fish that the Matagorda area has to offer.

Closely tied to the sea, Port O'Connor is home port to commercial fishing and shrimp boats, plus charter boats and a fishing pier. A wide variety of sea birds draws birders to this colorful community.

Alamo Beach, a community two miles southeast of Port Lavaca and just north of the junction of Farm roads 2717 and 2760 in Calhoun County, is bound on the east by Lavaca Bay. The settlement was established during the first decade of the twentieth century and had a post office from 1907 to 1915. About 1915 residents erected a seaside pavilion to attract tourists. That year the community had a telephone connection, a dairy, a real estate and life insurance business, and an estimated population of fifty-five. Although an Alamo Beach school district existed, there is no evidence that a school building was ever built at the site. By the school year 1935-36 the nine students of the district were attending schools in neighboring communities. In the 1970s the site was marked by a few scattered dwellings. In 2000 the community was listed in the Texas Almanac, but without population figures.
